The Belgian Waffle Box came about in 2016, after a trip to Bruges. We loved the waffles over there, and once back home soon realised that we couldn’t really get them back in the UK, not the freshly baked pearl sugar Liege Waffles anyway. We set out with the goal to maintain the quality of original product from Belgium, but to finish them off with all the favourite things us Brits love and make them much more exciting.
The WaffleThe Liege waffle originated in the 18th century by the chef of the prince-bishop of Liege. Seeking to win favour, the prince-bishop asked for a pastry filled with pieces of pearl sugar.
The result was a delicious treat that has been enjoyed in Belgium for centuries. Belgian pearl sugar is infused into the buttery sweet brioche style dough and when baked in a cast iron waffle maker, it creates a caramelised outer shell with a soft centre that when coupled with our carefully selected toppings will bring your taste buds to life.
Our next stop was choosing something that we wanted to serve our waffles from. We already knew how amazing our waffles would look, so we wanted our mobile catering home away from home to be something equally as quirky and individual. We decided to get a vintage horse box restored and converted that we would be as proud of as we were the waffles.
From our early conversations about setting up the business it was immediately obvious that sustainability and the environment had to be at the forefront of our thinking. Each choice we made with the environment born in mind. Or coffee cups and lids are all compostable, straws are cardboard, cutlery is wooden and our serving trays are compostable. Our generator is a Green Gear LPG model as this was considered the most environmentally friendly.
All of our staff are fully insured and fully trained in food hygiene. We are proud of our 5* rating and work hard to maintain in year after year.
